Deaf AU!

Quick note: things that anyone in this fan fiction say in sign language, will be in Italics. Regular speech is just regular

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Today was finally the day. You had been waiting for this day your entire life, and it finally came. Truth be told, you were scared about the outcome of it all, but you couldn't just back down from this.
 Today was the day you got your life back. Today was the day you could hear, and talk for the first time since you were little. Unfortunately, you had gone deaf in a car accident when you were about seven, due to some bruising in a special part of your brain. On that fateful day, you had also happened to be in the same car as your best friends Eren, Mikasa, Armin and crush Levi. It was your birthday, and all you had wanted out of the day was to spend it with your greatest friends, but clearly that didn't happen...
Ox~Flashback~xO
 Seven year old you sat in the back of your van, bouncing around excitedly in your seat. Your mom was currently driving you, Eren, Mikasa, Armin and Levi to the movies to see (favorite childhood movie) that had just come out. The trio sat in the very back with Eren squished in the middle, Armin on his left, Mikasa on his right and Levi and you in the middle, with Levi in the left seat and you in the right one. Your (h/c) hair bounced around with excitement, and you couldn't help but slip out of your seatbelt to turn around and talk to your friends.
 "So, who's ready to see it!?" You squealed excitedly, and chatter buzzed around the car. Levi hadn't noticed that you had taken off your seatbelt, and when he did, he was right in the middle of pointing it out.
"(Name), put on your seatbelt before we-"
"LOOK OUT!"
 And that's when everything started to go wrong. The 4 kids were almost perfectly fine, the worst of injuries being Mikasa who had gotten a bruise by bumping heads with you. On the other hand, you weren't so lucky. Since you were sitting on your heels, you couldn't really grab onto much to help with the crash. Your body flew out of its seat and sent you smashing into the back of the passengers seat, making a weird noise elicit from your throat and screams from the other 4. Your head had just happened to hit the bar that helped you stand up in the back of the seat, which made for a bad situation. Afterwards, you had fallen to the floor. Not for long, because seeing as they were still going, Levi lifted your unconscious body off of the floor and held it protectively to his chest for the ride to be over.
 Currently, the 4 children plus your mother were sitting in the waiting room for the results on how you'd been. Armin was comforting your mother who was sobbing into her hands, shushing her and saying "(Name) is a strong girl, she'll be fine." Eren, Mikasa and Levi sat together in a triangle on the floor, silent and worried. It was a rare occasion when Mikasa and Levi weren't tearing at eachother's throats, but they couldn't find the dignity to. They sat together praying for everything. Obviously, their moms had been called and were on their way to the hospital, each mother informed that their respective child was checked out by a paramedic in an ambulance on the scene, and was fine. With a bit of begging, their mothers each said that they could wait to be picked up until they heard what your results were.
 Finally, a female doctor with short blonde hair walked in and asked for anyone involved with (Name). Everyone gathered around the doctor to hear what she had to say about your condition. The children could have slapped someone at how blunt the woman was about it all. She immediately started out by saying "So, Mrs. (Last name), should I sugarcoat this or keep it blunt and simple?" To which the mother made an angry face and asked her to tell her outright.
 "Well, it seems as though everything else on (Name) is fine. A broken bone in her lower left arm around her wrist and a fractured bone in her foot. Now, here comes the bad news so prepare yourselves; (Name) woke up right before I left. I asked her if she was alright and how she felt, but she only gave me a weird look and tried to speak, to where she couldn't get coherent words out of her mouth. After a few X-rays and tests, it seems as though the crash left some bruising in her brain, leaving her deaf."
 The room was silent afterwards. The doctor told her mother the rest of the information she needed to know, which included the fact that she couldn't see you until the next morning because you had to recover mentally before visitors. Everyone there left depressed and heartbroken.
 Especially Levi. He had never told anyone to this day, but he felt as though it was all his fault that you had went deaf. If he has just noticed earlier, he could have saved you from that day. He could have saved your life from being ripped away from you, not being able to listen to music, or people talk and whatnot. So as he left the hospital that day, he made a promise to himself that he would stay by your side as much as he could to keep you safe.
Ox~Current Time~xO
 Levi had actually moved in with you after college, complaining that "you wouldn't handle yourself alone and that you needed some help if someone came to the door, or the phone rang."  You didn't complain since you liked him, of course. But, it was pretty awkward when you couldn't hear the laundry machine go off, so Levi had to go there and face your underwear and bras himself. When complaining it to him, he made a sound through his mouth (that by now you had mastered lip reading it, so it sounded like 'tch') and shook his head like it was nothing.
 After getting up and realising that today was the day that the surgery would pay off for, you sprung up out of bed and rushed to the shower to get washed up. A few days earlier, you had gotten surgery to place a device in you to help you hear with whatever the doctors would give you today. The surgery was a success, and you couldn't have been happier. After taking a shower and getting dressed, you rushed over to Levi's room and jumped onto his bed so that he shot up and groaned unhappily.
  "Hey, what the hell was that for, brat?" He signed to you, in which you smiled and signed back; "Don't you know what day it is? It is happy day!" and you wiggled a little dance in his bed, making him shine a little smirk that you couldn't see. He stretched his arms over his head, making you blush because you had only just realised he wasn't wearing a shirt. Your (h/c) hair shot up around you as you ran out of the room and to the kitchen to make breakfast for you both. If there was one thing you could do, it was make food. People all agreed you were a very good cook, taught by your mother when you were almost 13. She, along with the Trio and your new friend Hanji (from a few years ago) were going to be at this clinic where you would get the implant turned on and functioning.
 Anyways, about 10 or so minutes later, Levi walked into the room all showered and dressed. He raised an eyebrow at your little dancing by the stove (you were cooking scrambled eggs and brewing Black tea, Levi and your favorites.) Once you were done, Levi walked over and took the plate and cup from you, nodding his head in a thank you before rushing back to the table to eat. Just like everyone else, Levi really liked your cooking, especially your scrambled eggs. He always asked you what you put in them to make them so good, but quite frankly, you refused to tell him. Letting out a little squeak/hum of some sort, you rushed back to the table as well to get to munching.
"I can see you're excited for today, (Name)."
"Yes, I am. A bit worried as well, wondering how it will go."
 A chuckle escaped Levi's throat, that you could see as he rose up and down slightly, showing you that he was laughing. You smiled too and let a tiny blush overtake your cheeks. Levi barely ever smiled anymore, not like when you were kids, so it was nice to see him laughing for once. Cute too, but you would never tell him that. While putting away his dish and cup after he was done, he came over to you and ruffled your hair, reminding you to get on actual clothes, and quickly so they wouldn't miss the appointment. 'Oh shit...' You thought to yourself while you looked down and realized you really weren't in your casual clothes. With a blush and a nod, you were out the door and to your room, Levi making the little 'tch' sound as you left.
Ox~Timeskip to the car ride~xO
 After the commotion at home, the pair of you jumped into his convertible and drove to the clinic which was a measly 5 minutes away, with the raven-haired male as the driver. Whenever you two had decided to drive in Levi's car, Levi himself was always the driver for two reasons. The first one being that he didn't want you to drive in his car anyways, and two being the fact that you didn't want to drive it anyways. Whenever he had the top down, you always just smiled and felt the wind on your face, whipping your (h/l)(h/c) hair around the seat and your face.
 Upon arriving at the clinic, you were glad to see that your friends and mother had made it there and were waiting out front. Levi parked the car, but it wasn't quick enough, seeing as you had gotten itchy in your seat, flung the door open and ran to your friends and family excitedly. Levi sighed and got out of the car after parking and ran a hand through his hair. He was stubborn about it, but he didn't really want this to happen.. Apart of him did because it made you happy, but one of the only reasons he even stayed with you was to help out since you were deaf anyways. He soon wouldn't have a reason to live there anymore, and would have to move out, which he really did not want. Ignoring the thoughts that crept up on him, he walked over to where you were hugging your mother and signing excitedly to your friends. The only ones there who could actually sign back to you were your mom, Armin and Levi. The rest had to tell them what to say to you.
"Are you excited for this? From Eren. I'm so happy for you! From Hanji. I hope it works out, from Mikasa" your mother and Armin rapidly signed to you, which you replied separately until it was time to go inside and change your world.
 The room you were in was comparable to a dentist's office, with a moveable chair on the right wall, a little table in front of you where a Nurse was working on something and some chairs and a desk on your left. The door was behind you and to the left as well. The only one in there right now was your mom since she was family, the rest had to wait outside. The nurse was talking to your mom about something, and your mom was replying. 'Probably about the hearing aid,' you thought to yourself and winced as something sharp pinched you. Your mom told you that the Nurse had scraped you with her nail by accident and was sorry, and you told her back that it was ok.
 Finally, the nurse stepped back (and you got a look at her name tag, which said 'Christa') and smiled at you, pointing to this strange black box that was on the table at your right, sitting down at it and telling your mom to sign to you; "Christa is going to work on this machine, and you might hear a few little sharp noises but that is natural." in which case you nodded slightly.
 Over time of hearing those little glitches, the rest of them were able to come inside and see you, each one either smiling and holding your hand or signing things to you, which you signed back. They each sat down, with Hanji on the very left, Armin to her left, then Eren and Mikasa. Levi leaned on the wall next to your mother, and talked to her about something. Well, whatever it was, it made her gasp and come off of the wall to yell something at Levi, which definetly startled everyone else. When she did so, a sharp noise came through the box which made you gasp and cover your ears tightly, bending over so your forehead touched your knees. The nurse lightly scolded them about what would happen if you made those loud noises, which made everyone quiet down.
 When you sat back up, your mom was smiling at you like an idiot and said something to Levi, who blushed and looked away, which made Hanji jump up and say something, clapping her hands to her cheeks. Levi made that 'tch' sound again and said something else. You got distracted and looked at Armin, who was smiling at you and signing something to you
"They're talking about you, you know. They're arguing about who's voice you want to hear first. Levi wants to say something to you first, and now they're just discussing all that."
"I didn't know they took that much importance into something as silly as that, but I'm not complaining."
You grinned at Armin who grinned right back. The nurse tapped lightly on your moms arm, and started to speak to her gently, which made Hanji's eyes go wide and get out her video camera. "She is going to turn on the machine now and talk to you. Tell me if you can hear it or not." She signed and you nodded. 'Well, here we go...' You said as Hanji started the recording.
Ox~Flashback~xO
"Hey, Levi? Guess what we should do?"
"Ugh, what is it (Name)?"
"I think that we should be best of friends, forever and ever. We could move in together when were older, and listen to songs all the time~!"
"Tch, brat... Why would we do that?"
"Because we love eachother, that's why! People do that when they like eachother, right?"
"Hm. I guess.."
"....sooo? Will ya Levi?"
"..I guess so... Not that I have a choice right now..."
"Hooray! Thank you Levi.. You made me so happy! Best friends forever!"
Ox~Current Time~xO
 The memory hit you as a voice reached your ears. The voice was light and feathery, as if it came from some sort of angel.
"Hello? (Name), can you hear me clearly?" Christa spoke into a microphone. Your gorgeous (e/c) eyes widened and a whimper escaped you as a hand flew to your mouth. You could faintly hear some laughing in the background and the sound of someone saying "I guess she can hear you!" Tears sprung up in your eyes as Christa kept speaking. "Okay, now I'm going to repeat the days of the week to you, and I want you to tell me if the sound is leveled in each ear, and if it's loud enough. Okay? Let's begin."
 As Christa slowly sounded out the days of the week to you, you had to look at your friends and their expressions as she did so. Hanji had her camera blocking her face, but she tilted her head out of the way of the camera and grinned widely at you. Armin was waving lightly at you with amusement in his eyes, and you slowly waved back, Christa now on "Tuessdaaaay." Eren's face was a little like Hanji's, being he was grinning widely at you, his turquoise green eyes as wide as saucers, making you let out a little hum of amusement. Mikasa's face was slightly blocked by the red scarf she wore, but judging by her cheeks, she was clearly smiling at you. Other than waving, she did let out a little wave, but with her hands still in her lap. You teasingly did the same, and looked at your mom with the tears spilling over your eyes. She was crying as well with her hands covering her eyes, bent over slightly. Then your eyes moved to Levi.
 Normally, this wouldn't happen, but your heart started beating erratically and out of control when you noticed that he was silently crying too, a tear falling down his cheek. He was blushing like crazy, and had his head down to cover his eyes with his hair, though you could make out a smile.
 Christa got done with the test and you replied shakily that everything was good. "Oh wow! Normally when this happens, the person has a bit of a lisp in their voice, but it seems as though you haven't any!" She exclaimed lightly, making your shoulders jerk forward once as you laughed with tears still falling down. Your mom walked to Christa and said something, to which Christa nodded, got up and your mom sat down in her place, taking the little microphone thing in her hand.
 "H-Hello (name).... Oh my word..." She laughed and wiped her tears, then you smiled at her and nodded, saving your words for a bit later. Your mother talked to you for a bit before she decided to get up and let everyone else have a try. Hanji went first, saying how "This is even cooler than the time I met that band, the Titans!" To which everyone laughed. She had an overly-excited voice that you would expect from her. Eren went up and scolded you for scaring them all those years ago, to which Levi, Mikasa and Armin came over and dragged him away, but you pulled him into a hug while sitting anyways. Eren had that same angry type of voice he had as a kid, but a bit deeper. Mikasa and Armin said that they were proud of you for sticking up with them and especially Eren (to which Eren huffed and pouted) and you smiled and nodded your head in acknowledgement. The two's voices didn't change that much, maybe a little bit in pitch but they were basically the same as before.  And finally, Levi sat down in the seat.
 Your mother looked a bit anxious because she was twiddling her thumbs and looking down but holding in a laugh. Hanji looked like she was giggling insanely, the camera shaking in her touch. Levi had made a motion with his hands for you to turn your chair around, so you were facing him (cause before you were sitting with your back to the wall, you had to look to your right to see whoever was in the seat.) You were suspicious as to why he didn't just tell you that, but it didn't really matter. You'd soon hear his voice, the one you'd been dying to hear. Complying, you turned the chair around and faced him, wiggling your eyebrows in amusement to try to get him to smile.
 Lazily but quick, he grabbed your right hand in his left and dragged it so they were met halfway across the table. He finally took the microphone, you still crying and he still blushing and brought it to his mouth, where he spoke;
"I love you (Name). Glad to say that out loud for all these damn years, and actually mean it..."
 The room silenced just like that horrifying night all those years ago. But soon started up with you whimpering and crying yet again, but even harder so you were sobbing into your left hand. His voice was the most different. He used to have a kind of low, kid voice but it had definitely deepened in comparison. It was so deep and voluptuous that you couldn't help but laugh to yourself. Upon seeing you cry, he immediately shot up and kneeled infront of your chair with the microphone now on your side of the table, he kept holding your hand as he pulled you into a hug with your forehead on his shoulder. He only rocked you side to side comfortingly and shushed you every now and then.
 After you had calmed down, you looked at him with teary eyes and smiled. "S-So, you d-do remember that day..." The sentence escaped your throat, making everyone's eyes widen. Your voice sounded very baby like at the moment, but just how you dreamed it would be. His steel-grey eyes went half-lidded and he nodded his head. Bringing the microphone to his lips again, he talked; "of course I do brat, I had to promise something that I couldn't keep..." You cocked your head to the side and he cleared his throat. "I never got to listen to music with you everyday, now did I?" Your eyes watered again and you closed them contently. He leaned up and kissed your eyelids, comforting you to know that he really did hate breaking that promise.
 ".....(name), I'm sorry. I don't mean to be some shitty brat like Eren, ("HEY!" He called out angrily to Levi, making you snort) but I... I feel as though that day, I could have saved you, from... This. If only I had told you earlier... I insisted I move in with you so I could protect you from further harm, seeing as though I've done a pretty damn good job so far." He sighed and put his chin on your knees. Almost immediately, you lifted him up so he was eye level with you and you pecked him lightly on the lips. "Retard Levi. That wasn't your fault, mainly mine because I had decided to do that anyways."
 Levi couldn't respond because Hanji came up behind him, patted his back hard and took the microphone. "Didn't know shortstack here had a soft side! Lucky (Name), he only shows it to you.. I'll have to do some experimenting on you, (Name)." She said and laughed crazily, while Levi stood up and protectively put his arms around your head and pushed it so it was at his chest. "Hey shitty glasses, I'm still protecting her, so you aren't gonna be laying a finger on her, got it?"
 Before they could break out into a war, Christa took the microphone from them in a hurry and spoke lightly into it. "Sorry about that (Name). I'll guide everyone out of the room so we can finish some tests here, okay?" In agreement, you nodded and took Levi's right hand in your own left hand, his back still facing you and not even noticing that you had grabbed it. "Can h-he and my mom s-stay?" You asked quietly as Mikasa threatened both Levi and Hanji about fighting in there. She hummed as if to say yes, and shooed everyone out. By the time Levi went to leave, he still didn't realize that you were holding his hand 'till something held him back. He looked around to see you looking at him with a shaky smile, and was soon sitting to your left with a moved chair, still holding your hand.
 After most of the tests were done, (this included taking out the microphone and officially turning on the device so that you didn't need the microphone to be talked to) Christa told your mom about what had happened and so on, while Levi and you sat there looking at eachother. "So, you really d-do like me back..." You murmured to him at which he nodded his head. "I'll have to say it sometime so I guess now is as good as ever. I love you too."
 Levi perked up and slowly leaned forward, so your foreheads were leaning against eachother and your noses were side by side. With a look into eachother's eyes, your lips connected in a slow kiss, slowly coming out just to kiss at the same speed and compassion as before, except he brought his left hand to rub your right cheek, and held your hand with his right hand. When you mom was done talking, the both of you had decided that there was no where else you'd rather be than with eachother.
 Which is true. He didn't move out after all, and the two of you got together. You went on regular check ups to the clinic with him, only to get home and listen to music like you guys promised to do. It had become a tradition for after the clinic. A tradition that you'd rather not change.
